Global Carbon Budget 2025 and comparison to GCB2024

Global Carbon Budget 2025

Check out the Global Carbon Budget 2025. The McKinley group’s LDEO-HPD observation-based product is included for estimates for the ocean carbon sink from 1959-2024.

Below is an animation for the cumulative carbon budget for 1850-2024.

There were substantial adjustments to the land use source, land sink and ocean sink estimates for GCB2025, presented in a separate paper Friedlingstein et al. 2026, with a invited comment by Professor McKinley here. These adjustments substantially impact our view of the cumulative sources and sinks of anthropogenic carbon since 1850, as seen here in this side-by-side comparison of 2023 from last year’s animation and this new one.
